Calvera, a leading Spanish company for high pressure compressed gas transport and storage systems is playing a key role in biogas expansion in Europe. Its technology and equipment will be at the core of biogas and compressed natural gas distribution in northern Europe as a result of the agreement reached with the Finnish company Envor Protech Oy, one of the leading companies in Finland in that sector.
Under this agreement, 19 NG-Pod equipment units made in Spain will be dispatched to Finland, with further consignments to follow in the next weeks. Fernando Fernández, Director General for Industry, SMEs, Commerce and Crafts of the Regional Government of Aragón, visited Calvera’s facilities in Epila, where he became acquainted with the company’s plans and projects for the future and met management staff, including CEO Rafael Calvera.
With over 15 years of experience, Envor Protech Oy is a company dealing with clean environmental technologies, specialised in waste and waste water treatment from an energy based perspective. As leader in biogas technology in Finland, Envor Protech has built a series of plants for this fuel in Finland as well as other countries such as China and Thailand. In the centre of Finland this company is currently developing the first biogas plant in the world to utilise waste water sludge coming from a forest harvesting and paper mill plant site, with a 1.2 billion euro investment, to be operational in the near future. Envor Protech is involved in the whole production and distribution process, from biogas production and purification to storage and distribution to any type of industry, including petrol stations, as end-users. To that aim, it will use Calvera equipment, being its distributor for Finland, Sweden and Estonia. This technology contributes to the development of a circular economy in Europe by helping reduce fossil fuel use and CO2 emissions coming from transport.
Calvera’s NG-Pod distribution system has, at is core, a standard NG-Pod around which a compressed natural gas or biogas distribution system, at 250 bars of pressure, is built up, for multiple lower or medium consumption clients. This distribution system allows ease of turnover at the consumption point according to the clients’ specific needs, thanks to the optimised swift replacement of full and empty blocks. It is a suitable solution to cater for the demand coming from those gas distribution companies having to supply gas to populations in remote areas – either scattered or mountainous-, or to those clients in the tertiary sector, with low consumption and distant from conventional transport infrastructures.
NG-Pod, a product underpinned by extensive Research and Development, and engineering, has got advantages that far exceed those provided by any conventional tank, with ensuing gains in efficiency for logistics and lower filling costs or handling, since all modules can be filled up at the same time.
To ensure ease of use, the Calvera group has developed the NG TRUCK solution, with a trailer bed compatible with any tractor head unit in the marketplace. It can carry up to 10 NG-Pod units envisaging their coupling and filling, as well as the uploading and offloading manoeuvres thanks to an optional integrated crane.
This project falls within Calvera’s international expansion process, particularly in Europe. Calvera is already involved in other important biogas projects in countries such as France, where it provides turnkey services including full development of the facility and running operations: from clean biomethane compression to its storage, transport, decompression and consumption. Out of Europe, the Calvera group is developing similar projects in countries such as Colombia, where NG-Pod turnkey services are also provided. The company intends to manufacture 100 NG-Pod units in 2017, to be increased in following years.
